BP Portrait Award 2020: National Portrait Gallery, London

Selected from 1,981 entries by artists from 69 countries around the world, the BP Portrait Award 2020 represents the very best in contemporary portrait painting.

The Portrait Award is an annual event aimed at encouraging artists to focus on and develop the theme of portraiture in their work. The competition is open to everyone aged eighteen and over, in recognition of the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by artists of all ages. This year the exhibition was displayed online, before going on tour around the UK.

Moxon's portrait is of Sharmadean Reid, the British entrepreneur who founded WAH nails, who was awarded an MBE in 2015 for services to the nail and beauty industry. Moxon wanted the position of her hands in the portrait to suggest the source of her business success, while drawing inspiration from Hans Holbein's portraits of European merchants of the 16th century.
